Kaduna: Gonin Gora Traders Protest Against Market Demolition



Gonin Gora Traders Association in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have expressed shock over the recent threat by the Kaduna Markets Development and Management Company (KMDMC) to demolish the market.

 

The Gonin Gora traders in there numbers, locked their shops to protest, carrying placards with inscription “Save us Uba Sani", "We can develop our market", "Don’t kill the Economy of Gonin Gora", "Save Gonin Gora from Demolition".

The spokesperson of Gonin Gora Traders association, Olatunji Oluwaseun Emmanuel, explained during the protest on Tuesday, that the plight of the traders and residents of Gonin Gora regarding the planned demolition of the market by the Kaduna Market Development Company came at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with severe economic hardship, saying that the decision appears not only untimely but also insensitive to the struggles of ordinary citizens.


According to him, “Gonin Gora market serves as a vital hub for trade and sustenance, providing livelihoods for thousands of families. The proposed demolition, if carried out without a clear and immediate alternative for affected traders, will worsen the economic conditions of residents who already struggle with inflation, unemployment, and high costs of living.



“Your Excellency, your administration has always stood for the welfare of the people. We urge you to intervene and reconsider this move, ensuring that any redevelopment plans take into account the immediate economic realities and the well-being of the people who rely on this market for survival."



The traders suggested for a more consultative and humane approach, the one that involves dialogue with stakeholders and provision of adequate alternatives, assuring that it will not only protect livelihoods but also reinforce public trust in the Governor's leadership.



They appealed and also trust in the Governor's commitment to the people of Kaduna State and hope that you will take swift action to prevent unnecessary suffering.



Other traders that spoke during the protest, said it is the only market they have here and pleaded with the state Governor to rescue them.



According to them, they have widows, orphans among them in the market, stressing that they have seen other market demolished and traders could not afford to buy or rent the shops.



The Kaduna Markets Development and Management Company (KMDMC) is a Property Development Company that oversees markets in Kaduna.
