Leadership, Governance Take Centre Stage At Maiden Omoniyi Salami Colloquium In Kaduna

Prominent political leaders, business executives, academics, traditional rulers, religious stakeholders, and development professionals converged in Kaduna for the maiden edition of the Omoniyi Salami Colloquium, a one-day national dialogue dedicated to addressing Nigeria's leadership challenges.

Held at The Neat Place Luxury Hotel, Kaduna, the event, themed "Nigeria's Leadership Crisis: Who Do We Look To for Solutions – Political Leaders, Business Leaders, Religious Leaders?", was organised to commemorate the birthday of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEAT Microcredit and The Neat Place Luxury Hotel, Alhaji Omoniyi Salami.

The colloquium attracted an impressive gathering of business leaders, captains of industry, policymakers, academics, traditional rulers, friends, associates, and stakeholders from across the country, who engaged in robust conversations on the future of leadership in Nigeria.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Olusegun Falope, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Belmont Nigeria Limited, challenged Nigerians to embrace honesty, integrity, patriotism, and hard work, stressing that a nation's leadership is a reflection of its followership.

According to him, Nigeria cannot produce the quality of leadership its citizens desire without cultivating responsible, ethical, and patriotic followers who reject corruption and shortcuts to wealth.

One of the major highlights of the colloquium was the panel session, which examined Nigeria's leadership challenges from political, business, academic, and religious perspectives. The session was professionally moderated by Mr. Ayo Aminu, Group Chief Executive Officer of CLIQUE Nigeria, whose thought-provoking questions kept discussions focused on the central theme and encouraged insightful contributions from the panelists.

The panel featured Hon. Matthew Moses, NDC Flag Bearer for Chikun State Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly; Hon. Salahudeen Lukman, PDP Flag Bearer for the Kwara State House of Assembly; Hajiya Hadiza Aliko, Business Executive and Chartered Administrator; and Mrs. Abiola Ebohen, Consultant, Lecturer at Miva University, and Management Consultant.

Speaking from the political perspective, Hon. Matthew Moses advocated visionary, accountable, and people-centred leadership. He emphasised the importance of empowering young people, strengthening democratic institutions, encouraging innovation, and promoting active citizen participation in governance.

Also contributing from the political standpoint, Hon. Salahudeen Lukman stressed the need for inclusive governance, transparency, and responsive public leadership capable of rebuilding public confidence in democratic institutions.

Offering the business perspective, Hajiya Hadiza Aliko highlighted the importance of ethical entrepreneurship, sound corporate governance, accountability, and private sector leadership in driving national development. She noted that business leaders have a critical role to play in creating sustainable opportunities, promoting integrity, and supporting economic growth.

From the academic perspective, Mrs. Abiola Ebohen emphasised the role of education in shaping responsible leaders, advocating greater investment in quality education, mentorship, critical thinking, and institutional capacity as essential foundations for sustainable national development.

Collectively, the panelists agreed that addressing Nigeria's leadership crisis requires shared responsibility, institutional reforms, ethical leadership, active citizenship, and sustained collaboration among government, the private sector, academia, faith-based organisations, and civil society.

Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji (Dr.) Najeem Usman Yasin (Makaman Gusau), the Bashorun of Offa, commended the organisers for creating a platform that successfully combined celebration with meaningful intellectual engagement on issues affecting national development.

He described the colloquium as a timely initiative capable of stimulating constructive dialogue on Nigeria's leadership challenges while congratulating Alhaji Omoniyi Salami and his wife, Hajiya Oluwabunmi Salami, for hosting a successful event that reflected their commitment to leadership development, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and community service.

The Bashorun prayed for God's continued guidance, wisdom, and greater accomplishments for the celebrant, while also wishing continued growth for the family's businesses and impact across Nigeria.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Convener of the colloquium, Mrs. Oluwabunmi Salami, said the programme was conceived not only to celebrate her husband's birthday but also to stimulate practical conversations capable of producing a new generation of responsible leaders across political, business, religious, and civic spaces.

She noted that leadership is not about titles or positions but about responsibility, service, creating opportunities, and building institutions that outlive individuals.

In his remarks, the celebrant, Alhaji Omoniyi Salami, expressed profound appreciation to his wife, family members, staff, friends, and associates for organising the colloquium as a surprise in celebration of his birthday. He described the event as one of the most memorable moments of his life and thanked everyone who contributed to its success.

He also shared the inspiring story behind the vision that gave birth to NEAT Microcredit, recounting how the idea was rooted in his childhood experiences. According to him, the inspiration came when he was just nine years old after his mother resigned from her teaching job because of an unfavourable posting in order to care for her children.

Reflecting on those difficult years, Alhaji Salami narrated how he hawked sachet water to support his mother and siblings. He also recalled how his mother was forced to sell her poultry long before maturity because she could not access the funds needed to feed the birds to full growth. Those early experiences exposed him to the harsh realities faced by hardworking entrepreneurs and small business owners who lack access to finance, ultimately inspiring his lifelong commitment to providing financial support for small businesses through NEAT Microcredit.

He concluded by appreciating the insightful contributions of the keynote speaker, chairman, moderator, panelists, and participants, summarising the key lessons from the day's discussions and reiterating that Nigeria's leadership transformation requires integrity, service, collaboration, and responsible citizenship from every sector of society.

The event concluded with goodwill messages, presentation of gifts, commemorative cake cutting, networking, and heartfelt tributes from family members, friends, business associates, traditional rulers, and distinguished guests who celebrated the remarkable achievements and enduring impact of Alhaji Omoniyi Salami.
