Experts Warn Against Substandard Electrical Cables As NOCACO Holds Customers Forum






Dangers of substandard electrical cables and the damage they cause Nigeria's economy, came to the fore on Saturday in Kaduna, as the Northern Cable Processing and Manufacturing Company (NOCACO), hosted its 2026 Customer Forum.



The event which attracted distributors of NOCACO from all over Nigeria, sparked up debate on the need for Nigerians to embrace quality cables to protect lives and property.



Delivering a lecture titled, "Safety First: The Hazards of Substandard Cables and How to Choose the Right Cable for Every Electrical Application" Mr. Safiyanu Yahaya State Officer  of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), said that several lives and property worth billions have been lost to fire, as a result of substandard cables.



"Electrical cables are the lifeline of every electrical installation. Their quality determines the safety, efficiency and reliability of homes, industries, commercial buildings and public infrastructure. Building customer confidence in the cable industry therefore depends on strict engineering compliance and adherence to approved standards.



"Substandard cables remain one of the greatest causes of electrical accidents in Nigeria. They often contain undersized conductors, poor insulation and inferior materials," he said.



According to him, the consequences include, electrical fires, lectric shock, equipment damage, excessive energy losses,  frequent cable failures and increased maintenance costs.



Yahaya said that as the statutory regulator of engineering practice in Nigeria, COREN is committed to promoting engineering standards that protect lives, property and national infrastructure.



He therefore, advised Nigerians to always get the right cables.



"The right cable is not the cheapest cable; it is the cable that provides safety, reliability and long service life.



"NOCACO has established itself as a quality-driven Nigerian cable manufacturer by emphasising engineering discipline, quality control and compliance with recognised standards. Customers can have greater confidence in NOCACO products," he said.



In his presentation, State Chairman, Nigeria Association of Technologist in Engineering (NATE),  Engineer John Audu said that the choice of an electrical cable could become ba blessing or nightmare.

"Although an electrical cable may appear to be a simple product, the quality could become a blessing or a nightmare. 



"Quality in cable production must have an appropriate conductor, insulation quality, voltage rating and dimensional accuracy. He said quality is therefore, more than appearance. He said quality of cable depends on the materials used during its production," he said.

In the presentation, titled, "Quality and Standard in Electric Cable Manufacturing" said that electrical cables are fundamental to every aspect of human lives.



Earlier in his welcome address, the Managing Director/CEO NOCACO, Dr. Tunde Orija  said that the forum held annually, is  opportunity to celebrate partnership with customers and share  products update.

Customs FOU Zone ‘B’ Cracks Down On Smugglers Of Endangered Species

*Unit intercepts live pangolins along Kano–Jigawa axis The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’, has intercepted two live pangolins being illegally transported along the Kano–Jigawa axis.   This was disclosed in a statement signed by the  CPRO  FOU Zone B, CSC NA Saidu, made available on Tuesday.   It informed that the arrest occurred on March 12, 2026 at about 10:00 hours.
